Em 1 de novembro de 1755, um sismo de magnitude 8.5, com epicentro a cerca de 240 quilómetros de Lisboa, criou um tsunami que, em cerca de 40 minutos, devastou a cidade e matou mais de 10 mil pessoas.
Segundo a documentação histórica existente, eram 09H40 quando o terramoto foi sentido e pouco depois das 10H00 vagas de um tsunami - com ondas de 15 metros - atingiram Lisboa.
O Smithsonian Channel, da CBS, recriou a catástrofe que assolou Lisboa em vídeo. Nele é possível ver o efeito do sismo nas ruas da capital portuguesa e imaginar a força das ondas que varreram a cidade.
Para assinalar o Dia das Bruxas a equipa educativa da BE/CRE da ESA preparou uma mostra de recursos alusivos ao tema “Histórias de mistério, magia e... outras fantasias”

Com a generalização da comemoração do Halloween, ou Dia das Bruxas, tradição dos países anglo-saxónicos, a biblioteca relembra que em Portugal existe uma tradição antiga com raízes semelhantes ao Halloween - o Pão por Deus, no qual as crianças batem às portas pedindo doces ou travessuras (trick or treat).

7 O'Clock News/Silent Night é uma canção da dupla de música americana Simon & Garfunkel do seu terceiro álbum de estúdio, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme (1966). A faixa é uma colagem de som justapondo uma versão da canção de Natal "Silent Night" com um boletim simulado "7 O'Clock News" que consiste em eventos reais do verão de 1966.
À medida que a faixa avança, a reportagem assume uma maior presença através do aumento do volume. Desta composição resulta um comentário irónico sobre vários problemas sociais: discriminação social e racial, morte por overdose, guerra do Vietname, justapondo-os com sentimentos natalícios expressos com ternura.

Cook County Sheriff Richard Ogleby asked King to call off the march and the
police in Cicero said they would ask the National Guard to be called out
if it is held.
King, now in Atlanta, Georgia, plans to return to Chicago Tuesday.
In Chicago Richard Speck, accused murderer of nine student nurses, was brought
before a grand jury today for indictment.
The nurses were found stabbed an strangled in their Chicago apartment.
In Washington the atmosphere was tense today as a special subcommittee of the
House Committee on Un-American activities continued its probe into anti-
Vietnam war protests.
Demonstrators were forcibly evicted from the hearings when they began chanting
anti-war slogans.
Former Vice-President Richard Nixon says that unless there is a substantial
increase in the present war effort in Vietnam, the U.S. should look forward
to five more years of war.
In a speech before the Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in New York,
Nixon also said opposition to the war in this country is the greatest single
weapon working against the U.S.

Enquadrado na celebração do centenário do nascimento da escritora, a RTP 2 exibiu no passado dia 15 de outubro, a peça A Importância de Ser Agustina Bessa-Luís, um espetáculo de Miguel Bonneville, estreado em 2016.
Tendo como ponto de partida a escrita de Agustina, Bonneville apresenta em palco uma abordagem à condição social e cultural dos portugueses. Este trabalho caracteriza-se pela procura das raízes mais profundas do que é ser português através da caracterização que Bessa-Luís faz das personagens, em choque permanente com a sociedade em que vivem.
Com um estilo absolutamente único e enigmático, a obra de Agustina Bessa-Luís destaca-se pelas suas histórias intemporais numa busca pragmática de quem somos, sempre com personagens extremamente marcantes.
Agustina Bessa-Luís nasceu a 15 de Outubro de 1922, em Vila Meã, Amarante. A assinalar o centenário do nascimento de uma escritora apresentamos uma referência à sua vida e obra.

Agustina Bessa-Luís nasceu a 15 de Outubro de 1922, em Vila Meã, Amarante. Assinalar o centenário do nascimento de uma escritora que, no dizer de Álvaro Manuel Machado, foi – e continua a ser – “exemplo de solitária grandeza”, equivale a compreender os caminhos percorridos pela ficção portuguesa contemporânea, assim como a acompanhar algumas das muitas faces assumidas pelo século XX português, século que, pelas suas riqueza, diversidade e inconstância políticas, económicas, sociais e culturais, podia bem ser (e tantas vezes tem sido) personagem de romance. Tudo isto, para além do que é já do domínio do óbvio e do consensual: Agustina Bessa-Luís criou uma obra singular, inconfundível, impossível de delimitar e difícil de definir por não haver palavras que signifiquem o suficiente para tal. Eduardo Lourenço sintetizou-a como poucos ao afirmar que “imagem alguma existe, em Língua Portuguesa, que possa comparar-se ao que a obra de Agustina vai desenrolando diante de nós, tapeçaria voltada para o dia e não para a noite como a de Penélope”. Faz, por isso, sentido chamar a um colóquio que celebra Agustina e a sua obra “o riso de todas as palavras”, excerto de Maria Agustina, a trânsfuga, de Maria Velho da Costa. É o riso do espanto e da sabedoria, o riso da infância e da ancestralidade, mas também o do humor, da ironia e de um certo desdém; é, em suma e para se regressar ao texto de Maria Velho da Costa, o riso de quem “triunfa, menina total e raciocinante”.

No âmbito deste colóquio será apresentada a exposição Reflexos duma luz, que reúne dez ilustrações de personagens femininas de diferentes obras de Agustina Bessa-Luís, por dez ilustradores – Alain Corbel, Cláudia R. Sampaio, João Fazenda, João Maio Pinto, Luis Manuel Gaspar, Mantraste, Pedro Lourenço, Sebastião Peixoto, Susa Monteiro e Tiago Manuel.
Outubro - mês em que se celebra o Mês Internacional da Biblioteca Escolar, este ano sob o lema “Ler para a paz e a harmonia globais” a equipa da biblioteca escolar propõe o livro da professora e investigadora da ENS de Lyon, Sophie Guérard de Latour, intitulado "A sociedade justa, igualdade e diferença", porque a justiça constitui um instrumento para a construção da paz.
Outubro é o Mês Internacional da Biblioteca Escolar (MIBE), uma celebração anual das bibliotecas escolares em todo o mundo promovida pela International Association of School Librarianship (IASL).
Seguindo o mote Ler para a paz e harmonia globais, a Biblioteca Escolar, em parceria com a Rede de Bibliotecas Escolares (RBE) , e com a colaboração dos docentes e alunos, promoverá atividades em torno da promoção da leitura.
Em Portugal, o Dia da Biblioteca Escolar assinala-se na quarta segunda-feira do mês de outubro, este ano no dia 24.
